Special presentation by the Old World Folk Band. Hosted by Beth Israel Synagogue in cooperation with Lebanon County Library System. Call Lebanon County Libraries at 717-273-7624. The musicians and educators in the band will present a program that will make the People of the Book come alive to all who attend. The presentation will include an explanation of the Haggadah and its interpretation in different cultural settings across time. Examples of illustrated Haggadahs from around the world will be available for examination. The band will perform music representing different periods evoked in People of the Book, including a Judeo-Spanish Passover song from Sarajevo and a Yiddish Passover song about a family of crypto-Jews who escaped the Spanish Inquisition. This presentation by the Old World Folk band will demonstrate how culture is preserved and passed down through time and will include opportunities for participants to share their own experiences. Finally, the band will demonstrate and explain how people in disparate cultures and faiths act both simply and heroically to preserve music and the arts over time. People of the Book will surely come alive!

One Book, One Community Hosts Old World Folk Band Programs Throughout the Region!

The Old World Folk Band, based in Harrisburg, PA will present special regional programs in seven counties in celebration of this year’s One Book, One Community book, People of the Book by Geraldine Brooks. The programs will be October and November. The talented musicians and educators in the band will present a program that will make People of the Book come alive to all who attend. The presentation will include an explanation of the Haggadah and its interpretation in different cultural settings across time. Examples of illustrated Haggadahs from around the world will be available for examination. Susan Leviton will also demonstrate the art of Hebrew hand-lettering with a special emphasis on the style of the Sarajevo Hagaddah, comparing it with Hebrew lettering arts from other geographic regions. Like art and writing, music reflects different cultures and times. The presenters will demonstrate how culture is preserved and passed down through time and how people in disparate cultures and faiths act both simply and heroically to preserve music and the arts. There will also be opportunities for participants to share their own experiences. The band will perform music representing different periods evoked in People of the Book, including a Judeo-Spanish Passover song from Sarajevo and a Yiddish Passover song about a family of crypto-Jews who escaped the Spanish Inquisition. The Old World Folk Band has performed Klezmer and Eastern European folk music educating audiences in the northeast U.S. for 28 years. This 22 minute documentary searches for the whereabouts of the Sarajevo Haggadah, the first Jewish book of the Middle Ages with pictorial decorations. The book was lost when anti-Jewish riots swept the streets of Barcelona. Jews were murdered in the streets, and others ran for their lives. One family grabbed the book. But no one is sure to what happened to it after that. Call to pre-register.

The Old World Folk Band, based in Harrisburg, has been performing Klezmer and Eastern European folk music in the northeast United States for 28 years. The band's singer, Susan Leviton, is a nationally known calligrapher in the Jewish tradition, and will demonstrate the art of Hebrew hand-lettering similar to the lettering used in the Sarajevo Haggadah, a Jewish illuminated manuscript. People of the Book is a fictional story about a real item: The Sarajevo Haggadah, an uncharacteristically illuminated Hebrew manuscript. It comes into the possession of a book restorer and conservator, Hanna Heath, who tries to piece together its history. The author Geraldine Brooks moves the story through the various owners going back to the late 1400s. We also become familiar with Hanna herself and why she's so driven.
